Paria Thermodown 15 Down Quilt

These are the two quilts that come up in every “should I switch from a sleeping bag” thread, and they are close enough on paper that the usual answer — buy the lighter one — is not much help. They differ by 89 g (3.1 oz), which is less than a fuel canister's worth of difference.
What actually separates them is how each one tells you how warm it is, and how much say you get in its dimensions. Those two things point in opposite directions, which is why both quilts have loyal owners.

The ratings are not comparable, and the difference matters
Both quilts say 20°F. They do not mean the same thing by it.
- Vesper 20: Therm-a-Rest publishes an EN limit of 20°F (-6°C) and an EN comfort of 32°F (0°C) (Therm-a-Rest). Those come from a standardized lab test, and the two numbers describe different sleepers: limit is roughly the coldest a warm sleeper can take it, comfort is where a cold sleeper stays comfortable.
- Revelation 20: Enlightened Equipment gives a 20°F rating derived from a target loft of 2.5 in and states no test standard (Enlightened Equipment). It is a considered figure from a maker that knows its down, not a measurement anyone else repeated.
The practical consequence is that the Vesper's 20°F and the Revelation's 20°F sit at different points on the same scale. If you are a cold sleeper comparing the two, the Vesper's EN comfort figure of 32°F is the number to plan around, and EE publishes no equivalent. Nothing about that makes the Revelation a worse quilt; it makes it harder to compare, which is exactly why maker ratings and lab ratings should never be lined up as if they were the same thing. The full explainer is in temperature ratings explained, and what temperature quilt you need covers how to pick a number in the first place.
900-fill against 850-fill, and why the lighter quilt uses less down
Fill power measures how much space an ounce of down occupies, so higher-fill down produces the same loft with less weight. The two quilts show that cleanly:
| Vesper 20 | Revelation 20 | |
|---|---|---|
| Fill power | 900-fill goose down, PFAS-free hydrophobic, RDS | 850-fill gray duck down, RDS-certified supplier |
| Fill weight | 12.5 oz (360 g) | 16.08 oz (Regular/Regular) |
| Shell | 10D nylon ripstop | 10D outer and 10D liner |
| Total weight | 550 g (1 lb 3.4 oz) | 639 g (1 lb 6.5 oz) |
The Vesper reaches its rating with about 96 g less down than the Revelation, which is most of the weight difference between the two quilts. Its down is also treated: Therm-a-Rest lists it as PFAS-free hydrophobic, which helps down resist clumping in damp conditions, though no treatment makes down behave like synthetic when it is genuinely soaked.
Goose against duck down at a given fill power is a smaller difference than the internet suggests — fill power is the measurement that matters, and both are RDS-traced. What fill power costs, and where the price curve stops being worth it, is the subject of down fill power explained. If you camp somewhere genuinely wet, read down vs synthetic before you spend either of these prices.
Fit, width, and a measurement trap worth knowing
Here is where it is easy to read the spec tables wrong. Therm-a-Rest publishes girth; Enlightened Equipment publishes flat width. Girth is the distance around the quilt as it drapes; flat width is the fabric laid out. They are not the same figure and you cannot subtract one from the other.
- Vesper 20 (Regular): 79 in (201 cm) long, girth 49 / 43 / 40.5 in at shoulder, hip and footbox, and Therm-a-Rest says it fits users to 72 in (183 cm).
- Revelation 20 (Regular/Regular): 78 in (192 cm) long, 54 in shoulder width, 40 in foot width, in a stock lineup of Short/Regular, Regular/Regular, Regular/Wide and Long/Wide — with more combinations available as custom orders.
What you can compare is the options. The Revelation is the clear winner on fit: EE will sell you a wide cut, a short cut or a long one, and a quilt that is too narrow is the single most common reason people decide quilts do not work for them. The Vesper comes in Regular and Long, and the Long adds only about 3 in of shoulder girth, so there is no genuinely wide option. If you are broad-shouldered or you sleep on your side and move, that is the decisive line on this page — our side-sleeper picks go into why width beats almost every other spec.
The footbox: opens flat, or stays closed
The Revelation's defining feature is a 20 in zipper plus a shock-cord footbox that opens completely flat, so one quilt covers a 20°F night zipped up and a muggy 60°F night as a loose blanket. That is real three-season versatility, and it is why the Revelation is the quilt people recommend when someone wants one quilt for everything.
The Vesper 20 has an insulated footbox and a snap neck closure, with perimeter side baffles to control drafts. It is a warmer, simpler arrangement with less to fiddle with at 2 a.m., and it gives up the blanket mode.
Which you want depends on your trips, not on which is better engineered. One quilt that spans a wide temperature band argues for the Revelation; a dedicated cold-side quilt argues for the Vesper. The broader question of whether a quilt suits you at all is answered in quilt vs sleeping bag.
Pad attachment and draft control
Both quilts strap to your pad, and the details differ in a way that can rule one out.
Therm-a-Rest's removable SynergyLink connectors are designed around its own pads, and the product page notes they work best with regular-sized pads up to about 3 in thick when inflated. If you sleep on a 3.5 in pad, check that before you buy. Enlightened Equipment supplies two elastic pad straps with clips, which are pad-agnostic.
Drafts, not down, are what make quilt sleepers cold. Both of these quilts address them — side baffles and a snap neck on the Vesper, a cinchable neck and shock-corded footbox on the Revelation — and both still need the straps tensioned properly. If you have never slept under a quilt, budget a couple of nights to learn the setup before you judge the rating.
Buying them: shelf stock against made to order
This is the difference people forget until they want to order.
- Vesper 20: a stock product from a mainstream brand, sold through normal retail channels including Amazon. When we checked on 2026-10-30, Therm-a-Rest's own store listed the Regular as out of stock while retailers still carried it — stock on this quilt moves around, so check the current listing rather than assuming either way.
- Revelation 20: stuffed on demand by Enlightened Equipment, shipping in approximately 7 business days, and sold direct — no Amazon listing was found when we checked, so there is no buy button for it here and we earn nothing if you buy one. EE also states down product weights may vary by plus or minus 5%, which is honest and worth knowing if you are comparing grams this closely.
Both are 10D-shelled quilts, which is the most delicate fabric class in our catalog. Neither is a quilt to drag across granite, and both are two-year-plus investments rather than gear you replace casually.
Value, and the quilt that undercuts both
Against our cold-side reference, the Kelty Cosmic Synthetic 20 at 1,276 g (2 lb 13.0 oz), the Vesper saves 726 g (1 lb 9.6 oz) vs the Kelty Cosmic Synthetic 20 and the Revelation saves 637 g (1 lb 6.5 oz) vs the Kelty Cosmic Synthetic 20. On grams saved per dollar the Vesper scores Value 5.3/10 and the Revelation Value 5.7/10, and a higher MSRP band separates them.
That is the trade this site exists to make explicit: roughly half the Vesper's list price, about 300-390 g more on your back, tougher fabric, and a rating you have to take on the maker's word. If your base weight is nowhere near 10 lb, the Paria is the better buy and the difference pays for a lighter tent. The full field is ranked in the best budget backpacking quilts and the best 20-degree quilts.
Who should buy which
| If you | Buy |
|---|---|
| Want a lab-tested rating to plan around | Vesper 20 |
| Are broad-shouldered, tall, or a restless side sleeper | Revelation 20 (wide and long cuts) |
| Want one quilt for 20°F and for summer | Revelation 20 (flat-opening footbox) |
| Want the lightest of the two and the smallest packed size | Vesper 20 |
| Sleep on a 3.5 in thick pad | Revelation 20 (pad-agnostic straps) |
| Need it this week | Vesper 20 (stock item; the Revelation ships in about 7 business days) |
| Are buying your first quilt on a budget | Paria Thermodown 15 |
Whichever you choose, the quilt is one of the big three, and it is the item where premium money buys the most real weight. If you are assembling a whole kit around one, the $1,000 ultralight kit shows what a quilt at this level leaves for everything else. The same premium-against-budget question plays out in the shelter — X-Mid 2 vs Zpacks Duplex — and in the pack, where how to choose a backpacking backpack settles it with a published load rating instead of a price.
What we cannot tell you
We do not sleep under these quilts, so we cannot tell you which one keeps you warmer at 25°F on a windy night. Nobody honestly can: quilt warmth depends on your pad, your clothes, your metabolism and how well you tension the straps, and the two makers do not even measure their ratings the same way.
What we can do is lay out the published figures — 550 g against 639 g, an EN-tested pair of numbers against a loft-derived one, 900-fill against 850-fill, four stock cuts against two — and flag the measurement mismatch (girth against flat width) that makes the width specs look comparable when they are not. Every figure here traces to a maker page in the Sources list.
