A “20 degree quilt” is not one thing. One maker prints 20°F because a testing house put the quilt on a heated mannequin and measured it. Another prints 20°F because its loft chart pairs 2.5 in of down with that number. Both are on the shelf at the same time, and the gap between them is the single most expensive thing to get wrong in a sleep system.
So this page gates on the rating and then tells you where the rating came from. Every quilt below is rated by its maker at 25°F or colder, which is the class this site scores cold-weather insulation in, and each pick says in its own words whether that figure is tested or estimated.

What counts as a 20-degree quilt
Four quilts clear that gate. That is a small field on purpose: most quilts sold at a backpacking weight are rated 30°F or warmer, and those are on our summer quilt ranking instead.
How we picked
The full rubric is on our methodology page. Value is computed, not judged: each quilt's maker-published weight is measured against the Kelty Cosmic Synthetic 20 at 1,276 g (2 lb 13.0 oz), and the grams it saves are divided by its list price to give the grams saved per dollar figure in the table. Nothing here is scored on a brand's reputation.
One consequence worth stating up front: the quilt that wins this page on certainty does not win it on value. The Vesper 20 saves 726 g (1 lb 9.6 oz) vs the Kelty Cosmic Synthetic 20 and returns Value 5.3/10, while the Thermodown 15 returns Value 5.2/10. If grams per dollar is your only measure, you will buy the Paria. If a traceable rating is worth money to you, you will not.
The four quilts side by side
Read the Rating row before anything else. “EN limit 20°F / EN comfort 32°F” is a tested pair of numbers. “15°F from measured loft, no EN/ISO testing” is a maker's estimate, stated honestly. They are not interchangeable, and the second kind is not automatically wrong — it is simply unverified.
Who each pick is for
1. Therm-a-Rest Vesper 20: the tested one
900-fill PFAS-free hydrophobic goose down, 12.5 oz of it, in 10D nylon ripstop, with perimeter side baffles, an insulated footbox, a snap neck closure and removable pad straps, at 550 g (1 lb 3.4 oz). It saves 726 g (1 lb 9.6 oz) vs the Kelty Cosmic Synthetic 20. Therm-a-Rest publishes an EN limit of 20°F and an EN comfort figure of 32°F, which is the only pair of lab numbers on this page.
That matters because EN/ISO limit and comfort describe two different sleepers. Limit is roughly the coldest night a warm sleeper can take; comfort is where a cold sleeper is still comfortable. A quilt sold as “20°F” with no standard behind it could sit on either side of that 12-degree spread, and you find out at 2 am.
Buy it if you want the lightest quilt here and a rating you can trace. Skip it if value per gram is the whole point: on price it is a higher MSRP band versus the Paria.
2. Paria Thermodown 15: the cheapest rating below 20°F
800 fill-power RDS duck down, 20 oz of it, 20D ripstop shell and lining, a cinchable footbox and a pad strap system, at 936 g (2 lb 1.0 oz). It saves 340 g (12.0 oz) vs the Kelty Cosmic Synthetic 20, which gives it Value 5.2/10 — the best value figure on this page by a wide margin.
Paria rates it at 15°F from about 3 in of measured loft and states on its own FAQ that its products do not have EN/ISO testing. We would rather have that sentence than a confident number with nothing behind it. Treat the label as a maker estimate and give yourself margin: most people who sleep cold will want this quilt for nights in the mid-20s rather than nights at 15°F.
Buy it if you want the most down for the money and you understand the rating is Paria's own. Skip it if weight is what you are buying: at 936 g (2 lb 1.0 oz) it is the heaviest quilt here by nearly 200 g.
3. Zenbivy Core Quilt 25: lowest list price, with a catch
650+ fill-power 80/20 duck down, 395 g of fill, a 20D nylon taffeta shell over a 50D polyester liner, and a lifetime warranty, at 737 g (1 lb 10.0 oz). Zenbivy publishes a 25°F limit and a 35°F comfort figure, though it names no test standard. It saves 539 g (1 lb 3.0 oz) vs the Kelty Cosmic Synthetic 20.
The catch is in the design, not the numbers: the Core Quilt clips to a Zenbivy sheet, which is sold separately. On its own it is a quilt you would have to rig to a pad with aftermarket straps. Price the sheet in before you compare its list price with anything else on this page, because the system is the product.
Buy it if you want the Zenbivy bed system and the coldest version of it. Skip it if you are buying one piece: the 650+ fill is the lowest here, so you carry more grams for the same warmth.
4. Enlightened Equipment Revelation 20: the benchmark
850 fill-power RDS gray duck down, 16.08 oz of fill, 10D fabrics, a zippered and shock-corded footbox that opens flat, at 639 g (1 lb 6.5 oz). It saves 637 g (1 lb 6.5 oz) vs the Kelty Cosmic Synthetic 20. Enlightened Equipment states a 20°F rating with a 2.5 in target loft and names no test standard, notes that down weights vary by up to 5%, and builds each quilt to order in roughly seven business days.
It is on this page because it is the quilt every other quilt is answering. It is also sold direct rather than on Amazon, so it carries a plain reference link to the maker and no buy button — see our affiliate disclosure for how we handle that.
Buy it if you want a specific length, width and fill combination built for you. Skip it if you need it next week, or if you want the warranty-and-returns experience of a mainstream brand.
The rating problem nobody prints
Three of the four quilts here carry a temperature number with no test standard behind it. That is normal in this category: EN 13537 and ISO 23537 were written for sleeping bags, and a quilt has no back, no hood and no zip, so makers are not obliged to test one and most do not. Therm-a-Rest chooses to.
Two things change a quilt's real-world rating more than the label does. The first is your pad: a quilt insulates the top half of you and nothing else, so an R 2 pad under a 20°F quilt is a cold night no matter what the tag claims. Our R-value guide covers how to match them. The second is draft control, which is why neck closures, side baffles and a tight pad-strap system are listed as specs on this page and not as features.
What is not on this page
Every 30°F quilt we track. The Therm-a-Rest Vesper 32 at 440 g (15.5 oz) and the Paria Thermodown 30 at 765 g (1 lb 11.0 oz) are both excellent, both lighter, and both outside this page's gate. They are ranked on our summer quilt page.
Sleeping bags. A 20°F mummy bag is a different purchase with a different failure mode. If you are not sure which side of that line you are on, read quilt vs sleeping bag first, then the 20-degree bag ranking.
Synthetic quilts in this temperature band. We track none with a maker-published weight at a 25°F-or-colder rating. If that changes, the page changes.
The two premium quilts at the top of this category deserve a page of their own: Vesper 20 vs EE Revelation 20 covers the lab-tested rating against the made-to-order fit, and why their 20°F figures are not the same number.

How to choose a 20 degree quilt
- Decide whether you need 20°F or think you do. A quilt rated 20°F is a shoulder- season and cold-night piece. If your trips bottom out in the 30s, a 30°F quilt is lighter, cheaper and warmer than you expect.
- Find the test standard, then the number. EN or ISO means tested. Loft figures mean estimated. No statement at all means plan a band warmer.
- Match the pad before you match the quilt. Four R-value points under you is worth more on a cold night than a hundred grams of extra down over you.
- Check the attachment system. Pad straps, clip sheets and shock cords are what stop a quilt venting cold air down your side. Two of the quilts here include straps; one needs a sheet sold separately.
- Read the fill weight, not just the fill power. 850 fill with 16 oz of down and 650 fill with 14 oz are different quilts. Our fill power guide shows the arithmetic.
- Price the whole sleep system. Quilt plus pad plus the pillow you will actually bring. The $1,000 kit shows where a cold-rated quilt fits in a full build.
Mistakes to avoid
- Treating an untested 20°F as equivalent to a tested one. Three of the four quilts here carry a maker's estimate. That is fine, as long as you plan for it.
- Buying a cold quilt and a warm-weather pad. The commonest cold night in a quilt setup is a pad problem, not a quilt problem.
- Ignoring the sheet or strap requirement. A quilt with no attachment is a blanket, and a blanket drafts.
- Comparing list prices across systems. The lowest list price on this page needs a sheet to work as designed. Price the pair.
- Assuming a quilt is always lighter than a bag. The heaviest quilt here, at 936 g (2 lb 1.0 oz), weighs more than some 20°F mummy bags we track. Compare the actual grams, not the category.
How we scored this
How these picks were chosen
Every weight and list price here comes straight from the maker's own product page, measured against a named mainstream reference, then turned into one number: grams saved per dollar. Every figure links to the page it came from, so you can check any of it in a click.
Value and weight are computed from those published numbers; function, durability and ease are scored from the specs, manuals and standards each maker publishes. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The formula, weights and references are published.
