General information, not advice

Ounce & Outlook publishes general information about backpacking gear: tents, sleeping bags and quilts, sleeping pads, backpacks, stoves, water treatment and the rest of a kit. It is information only. It is not safety, medical or professional advice, and it is not a promise that any product will keep you warm, dry, fed or safe on a given trip. Backcountry travel carries real risk. Check the weather, the regulations and fire restrictions for the land you're visiting, carry what your trip actually demands, and follow each maker's instructions, including for stoves, fuel canisters and water treatment.

Specs, weights and list prices

Every weight, list price and specification on this site comes from the manufacturer's own published pages, and every figure links to its source. We don't test gear, so figures such as boil times, flow rates, burn times and temperature ratings are the maker's claims. Makers change models, fabrics, weights and prices, and we can make mistakes, so confirm the details with the maker or retailer before you buy. If you spot an error, tell us and we'll correct it and note the change.

Prices, availability and purchases

List prices (MSRP) on this site are the makers' own published prices on the date we checked them, used to compute grams saved per dollar. They are not the price you will pay at any retailer. Amazon and other retailers set their own prices and change them often, which is why buy buttons say “Check price on Amazon.” When you click a buy button you leave our site, and any purchase is between you and that retailer under its terms, shipping and return policies. We don't sell gear and can't help with orders.
