A summer quilt is the single easiest big weight saving in a backpacking kit. Drop from a 20F bag to a 30F quilt and you lose half a kilo and most of a stuff sack's worth of pack volume, for nights that are genuinely mild. The catch is that “summer” is not a rating, so this page defines it: every pick below is rated 30F or warmer by its own maker, and every rating on the page is printed in the maker's own wording.
Then the usual ranking: grams saved against a mainstream mild-weather reference bag, per dollar of list price. Full rules at our methodology page. If your nights drop below freezing, you want the main quilt ranking instead, which covers the 15F to 25F class.
| You want | Start with |
|---|---|
| The lightest quilt with a tested number | Therm-a-Rest Vesper 32F |
| The most warmth per dollar | Outdoor Vitals StormLoft 30 |
| A quilt that clips onto a sleeping bag | Sea to Summit Ember 30 |
| The lowest price | Paria Thermodown 30 |
What counts as a summer quilt
There is no standard. Quilts have no EN or ISO protocol at all, which Sea to Summit says in so many words on its own FAQ: there is no EN/ISO test for quilts, and the rating is an estimate. Therm-a-Rest is the exception on this page, because the Vesper is sold with EN figures carried over from its bag testing.
So the gate here is the maker's own number: 30F (-1C) or warmer. That covers roughly the temperature range most US summer backpacking actually happens in, which is nights in the 40s and 50s with the occasional dip. If you camp at altitude in summer, you are shopping for a 20F quilt, not a 30F one.
How we picked
The gate: a topquilt rated 30F or warmer by its maker, with a published weight and a published rating basis. The reference: the Kelty Cosmic Synthetic 40 at 1,021 g (2 lb 4.0 oz), a mainstream mild-weather bag. Value, which is grams saved against that reference per dollar, is 35% of the score, weight alone 20%, warmth for the weight 25%, materials 10%, ease 10%.
The evidence side by side
The weight spread is 325 g (11.5 oz), which for the same stated rating is almost entirely fill power and shell weight. The price spread is wider still, which is why the cheapest quilt here is not the worst value and the lightest is not the best.
Who each pick is for
1. Therm-a-Rest Vesper 32F: the best summer quilt overall
440 g (15.5 oz), an EN limit of 32F with an EN comfort of 41F, and saves 581 g (1 lb 4.5 oz) vs the Kelty Cosmic Synthetic 40 against a mainstream mild-weather bag for a value figure of Value 4.8/10. Read the two EN numbers together: 32F is the limit, 41F is comfort, which makes this a quilt for genuinely mild nights rather than a shoulder-season one.
Buy it if you want the lightest option with a number that came from a test rather than an estimate. Skip it if your nights hit freezing; the Vesper 20 exists for that.
2. Outdoor Vitals StormLoft 30: the best warmth per dollar
A 30F comfort rating by Outdoor Vitals' own reckoning at 556 g (1 lb 3.6 oz), in a topquilt built to strap to a pad rather than wrap around you. It saves 465 g (1 lb 0.4 oz) vs the Kelty Cosmic Synthetic 40 and asks a higher MSRP band less than the Ember 30 for a similar weight.
Buy it if you want a proper topquilt and a mid-range price. Skip it if you want a tested rating; Outdoor Vitals names no test standard.
3. Sea to Summit Ember 30: the one that clips to a bag
850+ fill in 10D fabrics at 544 g (1 lb 3.2 oz), with a QuiltLock system that clips it onto a Sea to Summit sleeping bag to extend that bag's range. Nothing else on this page does that. It is also the most expensive quilt here, which is where its value figure comes from.
Buy it if you already own a Sea to Summit bag and want a summer option that doubles as a winter booster. Skip it if you are buying one sleep system; the StormLoft is close on weight for less.
4. Paria Thermodown 30: the cheapest
765 g (1 lb 11.0 oz) at the lowest list price here by a clear margin, with Paria pairing its 30F rating to 2.0 in of loft on its own chart and saying plainly that it has no EN/ISO testing. It is 200 g heavier than the Vesper 32 and takes correspondingly more pack space.
Buy it if this is your first quilt and you want to find out whether quilts suit you. Skip it if your base weight is already low; the 200 g matters more than the money at that point.
The pad is half the system
Our R-value guide covers how the ASTM figure works and which pads publish a tested number. If you are pairing a summer quilt with a light pad, the picks on the sleeping pad ranking list R-values for every option.
What missed the cut
The Zenbivy Core Quilt 25. At 737 g (1 lb 10.0 oz) with a 25F limit and a 35F comfort figure, it is the best-value quilt we track, but its rating falls the wrong side of this page's 30F gate. It is ranked on the main quilt page.
The Therm-a-Rest Vesper 20. An EN limit of 20F with an EN comfort of 32F, at 550 g (1 lb 3.4 oz). If your summer nights are at altitude, this is the quilt to read about instead of anything on this page.
40F and 45F quilts. They exist and they are lighter still, but the usable window is narrow enough that most buyers regret them by the second trip. A 30F quilt with a light layer worn inside covers far more nights.

How to choose a summer backpacking quilt
- Check the rating basis before the number. Only the Vesper 32 here carries an EN figure. Sea to Summit states on its own FAQ that there is no EN/ISO test for quilts at all.
- Buy the pad at the same time. A 30F quilt on an R 1.3 pad is a cold night. Aim for R 3 or better.
- Check the width. Quilts are sold by width as well as length, and a narrow quilt on a restless sleeper leaks draughts all night.
- Check the strap system. A topquilt strapped to a pad behaves very differently from a loose quilt. The StormLoft is designed for the former, the Ember for the latter.
- Add a hat. A quilt has no hood. A light beanie is the cheapest 5 degrees you will ever buy.
- Check packed volume, not just weight. Fill power drives both, and a cheaper quilt at the same rating will take noticeably more pack space.
Mistakes to avoid
- Treating a 30F quilt as a 30F bag. Without the pad and the hat, it is not.
- Comparing an EN limit to a maker's comfort estimate. The Vesper 32's EN comfort is 41F, not 32F, and that is the honest way to read it.
- Buying too narrow. Width is the most common quilt regret, and it cannot be fixed later.
- Going to 40F to save a little more. The usable window closes fast and you will carry the quilt anyway on nights it cannot handle.
How we scored this
How these picks were chosen
Every weight and list price here comes straight from the maker's own product page, measured against a named mainstream reference, then turned into one number: grams saved per dollar. Every figure links to the page it came from, so you can check any of it in a click.
Value and weight are computed from those published numbers; function, durability and ease are scored from the specs, manuals and standards each maker publishes. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The formula, weights and references are published.
