Most packs sold to men are unisex packs in a darker colour. That is not a criticism — a pack is a frame, a belt and a bag, and none of those cares about anything except your measurements. What a “men's fit” actually means, when it means anything, is three published things: a torso option that reaches 21 in or longer, a hipbelt that is straighter and often longer, and shoulder straps set wider apart.
So this page gates on the measurements rather than the label. Every pack below publishes a size or torso-adjustment range that covers a long torso, and a load or carry rating we can cite. If you have a shorter torso — a lot of men do, and it has nothing to do with height — the ranges are all printed on the cards, and the short-torso packs are named at the bottom.
| Your loaded pack weighs | Start with |
|---|---|
| Under 11 kg | Granite Gear Virga3 55 |
| 11 to 20 kg | Durston Kakwa 55 |
| 11 to 20 kg, and your waist is over 50 in | Gossamer Gear Mariposa 60 |
| It changes every trip | Granite Gear Crown3 60 |
| Over 20 kg | Kelty Glendale 65 |
What a men's fit actually is
The practical upshot: buy by torso measurement, not by the word on the label. If a unisex pack's Long size covers your torso and its belt fits your waist, it is a men's pack for your purposes.
How we picked
Full rubric at our methodology page. The gate: sold in a men's or unisex fit, with a published size or torso-adjustment range that covers a long torso, and a published load or carry rating. The reference is the Osprey Rook 65 at 1,678 g (3 lb 11.2 oz). Grams saved against it per dollar of list price is 35% of the score, weight alone 20%, carry and capacity 25%, materials 10%, ease 10%.
That gate keeps three packs off the page that we rank elsewhere, and each exclusion is explained at the bottom rather than left as a silence.
The evidence side by side
The three sub-kilogram packs.

The frame sheet, the ventilated frame and the two haulers.
The range on this page is the widest of any pack ranking we publish: 1,388 g (3 lb 1.0 oz) between the lightest and heaviest, for packs within 10 L of each other in volume. That difference is entirely frame and fabric, and what it buys you is the ability to carry more.
Who each pick is for
1. Granite Gear Virga3 55: the best men's pack overall
762 g (1 lb 10.9 oz) for 55 L, in Regular (18-21 in torso) and Long (21-24 in), with a Re-Fit belt spanning 26-42 in and a Large belt option to 52 in. Robic 100D and 210D nylon, five pockets, lifetime defect warranty. It saves 916 g (2 lb 0.3 oz) vs the Osprey Rook 65, for a value figure of Value 4.6/10 — the best on this page.
The constraint is the frame, or rather the absence of one: Granite Gear publishes a 25 lb load rating and the suspension is a sleeping pad sliding into interior panels. Under about 11 kg that works genuinely well. Above it, you are carrying the load on your shoulders.
Buy it if your base weight is already low and your torso is 18 in or longer. Skip it if you regularly carry more than 11 kg, or your torso is under 18 in.
2. Durston Kakwa 55: heavy loads under a kilogram
895 g (1 lb 15.6 oz) with a removable hollow aluminum inverted-U frame rated to 45 lb, 55 L inside plus 15 L outside, torso sizes 15-22 in across three options and hipbelts spanning 29-42 in. It saves 783 g (1 lb 11.6 oz) vs the Osprey Rook 65, and it asks a higher MSRP band more than the Virga3.
45 lb is the number that matters. No other pack under a kilogram that we track publishes a rating that high, and it means a bear canister, a week of food and winter insulation all fit inside a pack that still counts as ultralight. The warranty is one year against defects, the shortest here.
Buy it if you want one pack for weekends and for two-week carries. Skip it if you want a long guarantee, or your waist is over 42 in.
3. Gossamer Gear Mariposa 60: the widest fit range
968 g (2 lb 2.1 oz) on an aluminum closed-shape frame with a pivoting hipbelt, 60 L total, rated to 35 lb maximum and 30 lb recommended, torso 16-22 in, and five hipbelt options spanning 26 to 61.5 in including straight-cut belts. It saves 710 g (1 lb 9.0 oz) vs the Osprey Rook 65.
If your waist is over 50 in, this is the only pack on this page that fits you without a workaround, and that is a genuine gap in the market rather than a footnote. The trade-off is the warranty: one year against manufacturing defects, with fabric durability failures explicitly excluded.
Buy it if standard belts do not reach, or you want seven outside pockets. Skip it if you are hard on fabric: read the warranty exclusion before you buy.
4. Granite Gear Crown3 60: for loads that change
1,080 g (2 lb 6.1 oz) for 60 L in Short (15-18 in), Regular (18-21 in) and Long (21-24 in), on a removable Vapor Current Mark 3 frame sheet. The rating moves with the setup: 25 lb frameless, 35 lb with the sheet, 43 lb with the optional aluminum stay. Lifetime defect warranty. It saves 598 g (1 lb 5.1 oz) vs the Osprey Rook 65.
Buy it if you want one pack that covers an 8 kg summer weekend and an 18 kg winter week. Skip it if you want the top load rating out of the box — the stay costs extra.
5. Osprey Exos 58: the ventilated option
1,320 g (2 lb 14.6 oz) for 58 L (61 L in L/XL), on a 4 mm LightWire frame with an AirSpeed suspended mesh back panel, 4 in of torso adjustment, sizes covering 17-23 in, rated 30-35 lb, with dual hipbelt pockets and a removable floating lid. It saves 358 g (12.6 oz) vs the Osprey Rook 65.
Two reasons it earns its place despite the modest value figure. The mesh panel keeps your back dry in heat, which no other pack here does. And the All Mighty Guarantee means Osprey repairs any damage for any reason — the strongest warranty on the page by a distance.
Buy it if you hike hot and intend to keep the pack for a decade. Skip it if grams per dollar is what you are optimising.
6. Osprey Atmos AG 65: the comfort benchmark
2,092 g (4 lb 9.8 oz) for 65 L (68 L in L/XL), on a 4 mm full peripheral frame with AntiGravity suspension, a cam-lock torso adjustment, a 30-40 lb load range, an included raincover and the same any-reason guarantee. It is the most comfortable pack we track at heavy loads.
It also weighs more than our reference pack, so it saves no grams and its value score is zero. That is the honest arithmetic of a grams-per-dollar site, and it does not make it a bad pack — it makes it a pack for someone whose priority is not base weight.
Buy it if comfort at 18 kg is the whole point. Skip it if you are trying to get your base weight down: read the ultralight comfort page instead.
7. Kelty Glendale 65: for the heaviest loads
2,150 g (4 lb 11.8 oz) for 65 L, on an advanced perimeter frame with an aluminum anti-barreling stay, a published optimal carry weight of 30-60 lb, FIT-Plus torso adjustment from 15 to 21 in, a 30-56 in waist belt, nine outside pockets and J-zip side access, with a lifetime defect warranty.
60 lb is 27 kg, and nothing else here publishes a figure that high. If you are carrying a packrafting setup, a camera kit or water for a desert crossing, this is the pack on the page that is designed for it.
Buy it if your loaded pack genuinely exceeds 20 kg. Skip it if it stays under 14 kg: it is the heaviest pack here and you are paying that weight for capacity you will not use.
Measure your torso first
Height tells you almost nothing about torso length. Plenty of 6 ft 2 in men measure 19 in and need a Regular; plenty of 5 ft 8 in men measure 21 in. This is the single most common reason a pack that reviews brilliantly hurts you, and it costs nothing to get right.
The second measurement is your waist where the belt will sit, which is above your trouser line, on your iliac crest. If that number is over 42 in, the Mariposa's belt options and the Glendale's 56 in belt are your realistic choices here.
What missed the cut
The Teton Scout 55L. Teton publishes a torso range of 15-19.5 in, which does not reach a long torso, and the pack is explicitly built for shorter backs. It is the right answer for some men and the wrong one for this gate; it is ranked on the budget framed page.
The Osprey Rook 65. One size with 4 in of torso adjustment and no published load rating, which fails the second half of the gate. It is this site's pack reference and it is ranked on the budget framed page.
The 3F UL Gear QiDian packs. Neither publishes a torso size; the QiDian Pro gives a body-height range of 170-190 cm instead. Both are excellent value and both are ranked on the budget ultralight page.
Women's-fit packs. Compared against each other on the women's page, where the shorter torso ranges and curved belts are the point rather than a limitation.
Two pages take the fit question further. If your torso measures past 21 in, the field narrows sharply — see best packs for tall hikers. And the full measuring method, with a chart of every published torso range, is in our backpack sizing guide.

How to choose a men's backpacking pack
- Measure your torso and your iliac-crest waist. Both, written down, before you look at a single pack.
- Weigh your loaded pack, or estimate it honestly. Under 11 kg opens the frameless options. Over 20 kg closes everything except the Glendale.
- Buy inside the published range, at the middle if possible. A torso at the very top of a range works; one an inch past it does not.
- Check the hipbelt spans your waist. 26-42 in covers most people. If you are outside it, the Mariposa and the Glendale are the packs that reach.
- Decide how long you want the pack to last. Osprey repairs anything, Granite Gear and Kelty cover defects for life, Durston and Gossamer Gear cover one year.
- Load it and walk before you commit. Ten minutes with 10 kg of books in it tells you more than any review, including this one.
Mistakes to avoid
- Buying by height. Torso length and height are only loosely related. Measure.
- Buying 65 L because it was the same price as 55 L. A bigger pack gets filled. Our size guide covers what each band actually holds.
- Ignoring the load rating because the pack “looks sturdy”. A 25 lb frameless pack at 35 lb does not fail, it just puts everything on your shoulders.
- Assuming a men's pack is a different product. Most are unisex packs in the longer sizes. If a women's-fit pack in a Long fits your torso and belt, it will carry perfectly well.
- Solving a heavy kit with a bigger harness. Every kilogram out of the kit is a kilogram the frame does not have to manage. Start with the big three.
How we scored this
How these picks were chosen
Every weight and list price here comes straight from the maker's own product page, measured against a named mainstream reference, then turned into one number: grams saved per dollar. Every figure links to the page it came from, so you can check any of it in a click.
Value and weight are computed from those published numbers; function, durability and ease are scored from the specs, manuals and standards each maker publishes. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The formula, weights and references are published.
