Single-Wall vs Double-Wall Tents: What's the Difference?

“Single-wall or double-wall” sounds like a simple spec, but it decides three separate things: how much condensation ends up on your gear, how much a tent weighs, and how much work you do before your first trip. None of those three move together the way you'd expect, which is exactly why this page walks through each one with real tents instead of a rule of thumb.

What the terms actually mean

3F UL Gear's Lanshan 2 is a textbook double wall: its product page describes a separate 15D mesh inner tent hung under a separate 15D fly, with an air gap between them. Its sibling, the Lanshan 2 Pro, is what 3F calls “1 Layer wall” construction: single wall, one sheet of coated fabric doing the job of both the weatherproofing and the tent body. Six Moon Designs tags its Lunar Duo, Lunar Duo Outfitter and Lunar Solo the same way: “Single Wall” on the product page. Durston Gear describes both the X-Mid 2 (“doublewall design”) and the X-Mid 1 (“full doublewall design”) with a “fly-first pitch,” meaning you can set up the waterproof outer layer before the mesh inner, which matters more than it sounds like, covered below.

Condensation: the real difference

Warm, moist air inside a tent (your breath, mostly) condenses when it meets cold fabric. On a double-wall tent, that condensation forms on the inside of the fly, with an air gap and a mesh inner between it and you, so drips run down the fly and off the tent instead of landing on your bag. On a single-wall tent, the one fabric layer is both your weatherproofing and the surface closest to your breath, so there's no buffer.

The makers themselves treat this as a real design problem, not a minor footnote. 3F UL Gear builds head and foot “condensation guards” into both the Lanshan 2 Pro and Lanshan 1 Pro specifically to keep condensation off the ends of your sleeping bag, where it touches the tent wall. Six Moon Designs states plainly on the Lunar Duo Outfitter's page: “The fabric is waterproof. The stitching isn't” — a reminder that a single-wall tent's one layer has to do more work, and the maker's own seam-sealing instructions matter more than they would on a factory-sealed double-wall tent.

What the second wall costs in grams

The obvious assumption is that dropping a wall drops weight, and sometimes it does — but not always, and not for the reason you'd guess. 3F UL Gear sells both constructions on essentially the same 2-person footprint: the double-wall Lanshan 2 weighs 1,060 g (2 lb 5.4 oz), and the single-wall Lanshan 2 Pro weighs 902 g (1 lb 15.8 oz), a difference of 158 g (5.6 oz). But the lighter, single-wall tent doesn't cost less: it costs the same MSRP band. The weight saving there comes from a thinner, higher-spec silnylon fabric on the Pro line, not from removing a wall by itself.

The counter-example makes the point even more clearly. Six Moon Designs' Lunar Duo Outfitter is single-wall and still the heaviest 2-person trekking-pole tent in our whole catalog at 1,616 g (3 lb 9.0 oz), because it's built from a heavier 190T polyester on a large 34 sq ft floor. Setup and seam sealing

Double-wall tents in our catalog tend to arrive more finished. The Lanshan 2 ships factory-taped, so there's no DIY step before your first trip. Durston's X-Mid 2 and X-Mid 1 go a step further: both state factory waterproofed seams and a “fly-first pitch,” meaning you can pitch the outer layer first and stay dry while you clip in the inner tent during rain, an advantage that's specific to having two separable layers.

Single-wall tents in our catalog put more of that work on you. 3F UL Gear states that the Lanshan 2 Pro and Lanshan 1 Pro's silicone-on-both-sides fabric “cannot be factory-taped” and must be sealed with silicone sealant before use, with no sealant included. Six Moon Designs sells seam sealing as a paid add-on or a DIY kit on the Lunar Duo, Lunar Duo Outfitter and Lunar Solo, none of which ship with stakes either. None of that makes single-wall tents worse — it's a real, sourced trade, not a defect — but it's a chore a double-wall buyer in this catalog usually skips.

Which one fits a budget buyer

If you'd rather not seal seams at home and want condensation kept off your gear without thinking about it, buy double-wall: on this catalog that means factory-taped or factory-waterproofed seams and no extra chore. If grams are the priority and you don't mind a one-time DIY seal, single-wall can save real weight, but check the specific tent's numbers first, since (as the Lunar Duo Outfitter shows) single-wall alone doesn't guarantee it.
