MSR Hubba Hubba LT 3
Illustrative stock photo. It doesn't show a specific product on this page.

Two people and a dog is a three-sleeper problem with a fabric problem attached. The floor has to be wide enough that the dog is not lying on someone's legs, and it has to survive a set of claws that will be wet, gritty and pushing off against it at 5am. Most “best tent for dogs” lists answer the first part and ignore the second. This page reads both numbers off the makers' own spec sheets: the inner floor dimension, and the denier and coating of the floor fabric.

The ranking underneath is the same grams-saved-per-dollar rubric we use everywhere (full rules at our methodology page), so a tent that is roomy and tough but heavy lands exactly where it should. Three-person tents here are measured against the three-person reference and two-person tents against the two-person one, because those are the tents each replaces. If the dog is not part of the plan, the 2-person ranking is the lighter page.

How we picked

Two gates. First, the maker publishes an inner floor dimension with at least 180 cm (about 70 in) of width, or 30 sq ft of floor area, so there is a real third strip rather than a gap. Second, the maker publishes the floor fabric, so the claw question can be answered with a number rather than a guess. Then the standard rubric: value (grams saved per dollar against the class reference) 35%, weight 20%, space and weather protection 25%, materials 10%, ease 10%. The references are the Clostnature 3-Man Tent at 2,900 g (6 lb 6.3 oz) for three-person shelters and the Kelty Late Start 2P at 1,900 g (4 lb 3.0 oz) for two-person ones.

How much floor a dog actually needs

A small dog curls into 35 cm quite happily and often ends up in the vestibule or on someone's feet anyway. A 25 kg dog stretched out takes the width of a human pad. Measure yours asleep on the floor at home before you decide which half of this page you are shopping from.

The evidence side by side

The three-sleeper shelters, where the dog gets its own strip.

Figures as published by the maker; each value links to its source. Performance figures are the maker's own claims. A dash means the figure isn't in our cited sources. List prices are the maker's MSRP when we researched (Sep 2026), not Amazon's price.

The fabric row is the one to read twice. The Kelty's 68D polyester floor is more than four times the denier of the Durston's 15D, and about twice the Lunar Duo's 30D. Denier is not a puncture rating, but it is the only comparable number any of these makers publishes.

Who each pick is for

1. Naturehike Cloud Up Pro 3: the best all-round pick

180 cm of inner width at 1,750 g (3 lb 13.7 oz), freestanding, with a footprint and 15 stakes included. It saves 1,150 g (2 lb 8.6 oz) vs the Clostnature 3-Man Tent against a mainstream three-person tent, for a value figure of Value 8.3/10. The included footprint matters more here than on a normal tent page: it is a second layer under the claws for nothing extra.

Buy it if your dog is small to medium and you want the lightest workable answer. Skip it if anyone is near six foot; the 220 cm inner length is short.

2. Durston X-Mid 2: the two-door pick

Two doors and two 11.5 sq ft vestibules is the feature that matters with a dog. Whoever is closest gets up, unzips their own door and lets the dog out, and nobody crawls over anybody at 5am. The floor is 92 x 52 in in 15D Sil/PE nylon rated 3,500 mm, which is the thinnest floor on this page. Durston sells it direct rather than through Amazon.

Buy it if your dog gets up early and your tent partner does not. Skip it if the dog is a digger; 15D is the least claw-tolerant fabric here.

3. MSR Hubba Hubba LT 3: the big-dog pick

47 sq ft of untapered floor, which by MSR's own description takes three rectangular pads side by side. That is a full pad width for a large dog instead of the leftover strip. Two side doors, 16 sq ft of vestibule, a 20D ripstop nylon floor at 1800 mm. It saves 920 g (2 lb 0.5 oz) vs the Clostnature 3-Man Tent but asks a higher MSRP band more than the Cloud Up Pro 3 to do it.

Buy it if your dog is genuinely large. Skip it if value per gram is the deciding factor.

4. Naturehike Cloud Up Base 3: the budget pick

Same 180 cm inner width and the same freestanding shape as the Pro, in 210T polyester at PU 3000 mm. At 2,320 g (5 lb 1.8 oz) it is 570 g heavier and it drops the footprint. The heavier polyester is arguably the better dog floor; you just carry it.

Buy it if price is the constraint and you will add a groundsheet. Skip it if you can stretch to the Pro and want the footprint included.

5. Six Moon Designs Lunar Duo: the widest two-person floor

54 in across and 90 in long, 34 sq ft, on a 30D silicone-coated polyester floor rated 3,000 mm, with dual side entry. Of the two-person shelters here it has both the most floor and the second-toughest fabric. At 1,276 g (2 lb 13.0 oz) it is heavier than the Cloud Up Pro 3 that sleeps three.

Buy it if you want a two-person trekking-pole shelter with real width. Skip it if you want it waterproof out of the bag; Six Moon ships it unsealed.

6. Kelty Late Start 2P: the toughest floor

68D polyester on both fly and floor at 1200 mm, PFAS-free DWR, with a fitted footprint Kelty sells for the same tent. Nothing else on this page is remotely as thick underfoot. It is also the two-person reference tent for this site, at 1,900 g (4 lb 3.0 oz), so it saves no weight against itself and the rubric ranks it accordingly.

Buy it if your dog has already destroyed one tent floor and you are done counting grams. Skip it if the walk is long; everything above it here is lighter.

7. Clostnature 3-Man Tent: the cheapest room

220 x 190 cm inside, two doors, two vestibules, 210T polyester at PU 5000 on fly and groundsheet, and a lifetime warranty on materials and workmanship. It is the cheapest way here to give a dog its own strip, and at 2.9 kg it is the reference weight this page is scored against.

Buy it if the trip is a mile from the car and the budget is hard. Skip it if you are walking all day with it.

Floor fabric, claws and the footprint question

Denier is the only fabric number all of these makers publish, and it measures yarn thickness, not puncture resistance. It is still the best proxy available: a 68D polyester floor is meaningfully harder to hole than a 15D nylon one, and every maker here prints the figure. Coating matters too, but a PU or silicone coating protects against water, not claws.

Trim the dog's nails before a trip and the problem mostly goes away. That is free, and it is more effective than any fabric choice on this page.

What missed the cut

The Zpacks Duplex and other Dyneema shelters. A 0.75 oz/sqyd Dyneema floor is the last thing you want under a wet dog, and the price makes a mistake expensive. Excellent tents; wrong page.

Two-person tents under 130 cm of floor width. The Big Agnes Copper Spur UL2 and Fly Creek UL2 both taper at the foot, so the space a dog would use narrows to about 107 cm exactly where the dog wants to lie. They are ranked on the 2-person page instead.

The Naturehike Mongar BASE 3. It is the roomiest tent we track in this class and it would suit a large dog well, but at 2.85 kg it is within 50 g of the reference, so it lands near the bottom of the ranking on the 3-person page and adds nothing here that the Clostnature does not.

What the specs support

  • Lightest minimum weight of any 3-person tent here by the makers' own figures.
  • Footprint and 15 stakes are in the box, both extra purchases on most trekking-pole shelters.
  • Freestanding, so it pitches on rock, sand and tent platforms.

Where it falls short

  • Naturehike does not publish a door or vestibule count for this model.
  • The 220 cm inner length is the shortest of the freestanding picks here, tight for a hiker near 6 ft.

Skip it if…

Skip it if anyone in the tent is close to 6 ft tall: the inner is 220 cm long and the Mongar BASE 3 and MSR give you more room end to end.

How to choose a tent for two people and a dog

  1. Measure the dog asleep. Stretched out, nose to tail, plus a few inches. That is the strip you are shopping for, and it decides whether you need a three-person tent at all.
  2. Add 102 cm for the two humans. Two regular pads. Anything under about 140 cm of inner width means the dog is on the pads, not beside them.
  3. Read the floor denier. 15D, 20D, 30D and 68D are all on this page, and the difference is real even though none of them is a puncture rating.
  4. Count the doors. Two doors is the single biggest quality-of-life feature with a dog. Three of the seven picks here have them.
  5. Check the vestibule area. A muddy dog that sleeps in a 9 sq ft vestibule is a solved problem. The MSR publishes 16 sq ft across two, the X-Mid 2 publishes 11.5 sq ft each side.
  6. Budget for floor protection. Either buy a tent with a footprint included, or add one. It is the cheapest part of this decision.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming a 2-person tent stretches. It does not. A 137 cm floor is two pads and a 35 cm gap, and the dog will simply lie on you.
  • Buying the thinnest fabric available. 15D floors are the reason ultralight tents weigh what they do. With a dog, that trade is worse than it looks.
  • Relying on a groundsheet to stop claws. It protects the outside of the floor. Claws come from inside.
  • Forgetting the vestibule is the dog's room. On a wet trip it is where the dog and its mud actually end up, so vestibule area is worth as much as floor area.

How we scored this

How these picks were chosen

Every weight and list price here comes straight from the maker's own product page, measured against a named mainstream reference, then turned into one number: grams saved per dollar. Every figure links to the page it came from, so you can check any of it in a click.

Value and weight are computed from those published numbers; function, durability and ease are scored from the specs, manuals and standards each maker publishes. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The formula, weights and references are published.

On our math, the Naturehike Cloud Up Pro 3: a 180 cm inner width leaves a full strip beside two sleeping pads, it saves 1,150 g (2 lb 8.6 oz) vs the Clostnature 3-Man Tent and it includes a footprint. For a large dog, the MSR Hubba Hubba LT 3 publishes 47 sq ft of untapered floor.
Do I need a 3-person tent for two people and a dog?
For a medium or large dog, yes. Two regular sleeping pads take 102 cm; a two-person tent is typically 132-137 cm wide, which leaves about 35 cm. A three-person tent at 180 cm leaves a genuine 60-78 cm strip.
Will a dog's claws go through a tent floor?
Thin floors are at real risk. The floors on this page run from 15D nylon to 68D polyester, and denier is the only comparable number the makers publish. Trimmed nails and a layer under the dog matter more than the fabric choice.
Should the dog sleep in the vestibule?
On a wet trip, often. A vestibule keeps mud out of the sleeping area and most dogs settle there happily. The MSR Hubba Hubba LT 3 publishes 16 sq ft across two vestibules; the Durston X-Mid 2 publishes 11.5 sq ft on each side.
Is a footprint worth it if you camp with a dog?
A footprint protects the outside of the floor from abrasion, which is a real benefit, but it does nothing about claws from inside. See do you need a tent footprint for the full case either way.
