The Best Backpacking Backpacks for Petite Women

A pack that does not fit a short torso transfers nothing to your hips, however good it is. These are the four packs whose makers publish a torso range that actually goes short.

Granite Gear Virga3 55 Women's (Short)
Illustrative stock photo. It doesn't show a specific product on this page.

“Women's fit” on a pack label means several different things, and only one of them is the thing a petite hiker needs. Some women's packs change the shoulder strap curve. Some change the hipbelt angle. Fewer change the torso length, which is the measurement that decides whether the hipbelt sits on your iliac crest or somewhere around your ribs — and if it is on your ribs, the pack is hanging off your shoulders no matter what the marketing says.

So this page gates on one published figure: a torso range that reaches 18 inches or shorter. Four packs clear it. The ones that do not are named at the bottom with their own numbers, because several of them are excellent packs sold to people they will never fit.

The number that decides fit

Torso length is the distance from your C7 vertebra (the bump at the base of your neck when you tip your head forward) to the line between the tops of your hip bones. It has almost nothing to do with your height: two people at 5 ft 4 in can be three inches apart. Most short-torso hikers measure between 15 and 18 in, and most packs start at 17 or 18.

How we picked

Every pack here has a maker-published torso range whose lower bound is 18 in or less, taken from the maker's own product page. Within that, they are ranked on grams saved per dollar against our reference pack, the same rubric every roundup on this site uses — it is published in full on our methodology page.

We do not rank on fit quality, because we cannot measure it from a spec sheet and nobody honestly can. We rank packs that publish a short torso option, and then tell you what each one costs in grams, dollars and load ceiling.

The four packs side by side

Figures as published by the maker; each value links to its source. Performance figures are the maker's own claims. A dash means the figure isn't in our cited sources. List prices are the maker's MSRP when we researched (Sep 2026), not Amazon's price.

The spread is the story. The Virga3 55 Women's is 735 g (1 lb 9.9 oz) and saves 943 g (2 lb 1.3 oz) vs the Osprey Rook 65, at Value 4.7/10. The Teton Scout 55L is nearly three times the weight — and a higher MSRP band cheaper than the Crown3 60 S.I., which is the whole argument for it.

Measure your torso first

Two minutes with a soft tape and a friend, and it is the single highest-value thing you can do before buying any pack:

  1. Tip your head forward and find the bony bump at the base of your neck. That is C7.
  2. Put your hands on your hips with thumbs back, fingers forward. The imaginary line between your thumbs is the iliac crest.
  3. Measure along the curve of your spine from C7 to that line. That is your torso length.

Then read the maker's range rather than its size letter. Granite Gear lists Short as 15-18 in and Regular as 18-21 in on both the Virga3 55 Women's and the Crown3 60 S.I. ECO Women's. Gossamer Gear lists Small at 16-18 in, Medium 18-20 in and Large 20-22 in for the Gorilla 50. Teton lists 15-19.5 in for the Scout 55L with an adjustable back panel. Our backpack sizing guide has the full size chart built from every maker we track.

The hipbelt problem nobody mentions

Short torso and narrow hips do not go together as often as pack makers assume, and a belt that will not cinch down — or will not let out — wastes a correctly-sized frame.

  • Granite Gear publishes a Standard Re-Fit belt at 24-40 in and a Large Re-Fit belt at 36-52 in on both the Virga3 55 Women's and the Crown3 60 S.I. ECO Women's. That 52 in upper bound is the widest published figure here, and the Crown3 60 S.I. is the pack to look at if standard belts do not reach.
  • Gossamer Gear offers the Gorilla 50 in two belt shapes: a Curved belt (an S-curve for a wider waist-to-hip ratio) in S/M 28.5-56 in and M/L 32.5-60 in, or a Straight belt in three sizes. Being able to choose the shape rather than only the length is unusual and genuinely useful.
  • Teton lists a 26-60 in waist belt on the Scout 55L, the widest span of any pack here.

If your waist-to-hip ratio is pronounced, the belt shape matters more than the belt length, and the Gorilla 50 is the only pack here that lets you pick it.

Packs that did not qualify

Named with their own published figures, because these are good packs that simply do not go short enough:

  • Granite Gear Crown3 40 ECO Women's — a genuinely good 40 L weekend pack with a 35 lb framesheet rating, but Granite Gear lists it in one torso range only, 18-21 in. If your torso is under 18 in, this is not your pack, and the Crown3 60 S.I. is the one with a Short.
  • Osprey Exos 58 — the S22 owner's manual lists S/M at 17-20.5 in. That reaches 17, which is short-ish, but it is a unisex-cut pack and the Eja is its women's-specific sibling. It misses the 18 in gate from the wrong side: the range starts at 17, so a 15 or 16 in torso is out.
  • Osprey Rook 65 and Atmos AG 65 — neither product page publishes a torso range in inches, and an unpublished figure cannot clear a published-figure gate. They may well fit; we cannot show that they do.

Match the pack to your load, not your trip

The load ceilings here differ by more than double, and they are the second most common source of a miserable pack after torso length.

PackMaker's load ratingSuits
Granite Gear Virga3 55 Women's25 lbsA low base weight and short food carries
Gossamer Gear Gorilla 5025 lbs comfort, 30 lbs maximumThree-season trips with a frame behind you
Granite Gear Crown3 60 S.I. ECO Women's25 lbs frameless, 35 lbs with the framesheetLonger food carries and bear canisters
Teton Scout 55LNot published; 3/4 frame, 2-3 day suggested tripsA first pack, before you know your numbers

A frameless pack past its ceiling is not a weight saving, it is a shoulder injury with a lower list price. Granite Gear names 25 lbs on the Virga3 itself. If your loaded weight routinely goes over that, buy the framed pack and accept the 300 g. The arithmetic behind that is on frameless vs framed backpacks, and how heavy should my backpack be works out what your real number is.

What the specs support

  • 735 g in a 55 L pack: nothing else with a women's fit here is close.
  • Two large hipbelt pockets, which most sub-kilo packs give up.
  • Adjustable torso height and width, so the fit is not fixed at purchase.

Where it falls short

  • Frameless, with a 25 lb recommended ceiling: this is a pack for a base weight already under control.
  • No lid, no top pocket.

Skip it if…

Skip it if your loaded pack goes over 25 lbs: Granite Gear names that ceiling itself, and a frameless pack past it is a shoulder problem, not a weight saving.

What the specs support

  • A real aluminum frame under 900 g, so the load rides on your hips rather than your shoulders.
  • The curved hipbelt is sized and shaped for a wider waist-to-hip ratio, which is the fit difference that actually matters.
  • Three torso sizes and five hipbelt options, sold separately from the pack body.

Where it falls short

  • Sold direct by Gossamer Gear only, so the link here earns nothing.
  • 150 g heavier than the Virga3 55 Women's for 5 L less capacity.
  • A higher list price than either Granite Gear pack on this page.

Skip it if…

Skip it if 30 lbs is a normal loaded weight for you: Gossamer Gear caps the maximum carry there, and the framed Crown3 packs here take considerably more.

What the specs support

  • 60 L with a removable framesheet, so the same pack works at 25 lbs or 35 lbs.
  • The lid converts to a lumbar or chest pack.

Where it falls short

  • 300 g heavier than the Virga3 55 Women's for 5 L more.
  • The framesheet is what earns the 35 lb rating; without it you are back to 25 lbs.

Skip it if…

Skip it if your base weight is already low and your hips are a standard belt size: the Virga3 55 Women's is 300 g lighter for nearly the same capacity.

Buy by torso, then by load, then by grams. Everything on this page is a published figure from the maker, and in that order they eliminate the wrong packs fastest. A 15 in torso with a 30 lb load has exactly one good answer here (the Crown3 60 S.I. ECO Women's); a 17 in torso with an 18 lb load has a much cheaper one.

Volume is usually not the constraint. A 55 L pack and a 60 L pack carry the same kit; what changes is how much air you compress out. If you are choosing on litres rather than fit, read what size backpack for backpacking first.

Women's-fit is not the same as petite. Our women's ultralight pack ranking covers the wider field, including packs that fit a 20 in torso perfectly well. This page is the subset with a published short option, which is a smaller and more useful list if you are the person the standard sizes miss.

Check the belt before you check the colour. Granite Gear's Large Re-Fit belt reaches 52 in and Gossamer Gear sells two belt shapes. Those options exist because standard belts do not fit everybody, and ordering the wrong one is the most common avoidable mistake on this list.

How we scored this

How these picks were chosen

Every weight and list price here comes straight from the maker's own product page, measured against a named mainstream reference, then turned into one number: grams saved per dollar. Every figure links to the page it came from, so you can check any of it in a click.

Value and weight are computed from those published numbers; function, durability and ease are scored from the specs, manuals and standards each maker publishes. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The formula, weights and references are published.

Questions

Frequently asked

What backpack size is best for a petite woman?
Fit is set by torso length, not height or litres. Measure from your C7 vertebra to the line between your hip bones; most petite hikers land between 15 and 18 in, and you want a pack whose published range covers that figure. Granite Gear's Short is 15-18 in on both the Virga3 55 Women's and the Crown3 60 S.I.
Do women's backpacks have shorter torsos?
Not always. Some women's packs change only the shoulder strap curve and hipbelt angle, keeping the same torso range as the unisex model. Read the published torso range on the product page rather than trusting the label.
Is a frameless pack a bad idea for a small person?
Not at all, as long as your loaded weight stays under the maker's ceiling. Granite Gear rates the Virga3 55 at 25 lbs. Below that it is the lightest option here by a wide margin; above it, a frameless pack puts the load on your shoulders and the weight saving stops being worth it.
What is the lightest women's backpacking backpack?
Of the packs we track with a published women's fit, the Granite Gear Virga3 55 Women's in Short at 735 g. Granite Gear also lists a stripped weight of 1.18 lbs if you remove the lid and other removable parts.
