Every other roundup on this site ranks gear for saving weight against a reference. A backpacking chair is the opposite: the lightest chair here still adds 567 g (1 lb 4.0 oz) to your pack that a sit-pad or a log at camp would add for free. We're not going to pretend otherwise. What this page ranks instead is value inside the category itself: which chair gets you the most comfort, capacity or feature for the fewest grams and dollars, once you've already decided a chair is worth carrying.

How we picked

The reference and the math. Every grams-saved figure on this page is measured against the Helinox Chair One, the packable camp chair every other chair here is compared to, which the maker lists at 965 g (2 lb 2.0 oz) packed. Grams per dollar is grams saved divided by the maker's list price. The full rubric is on our methodology page.

Weight basis. We used each maker's packed weight (chair plus carry case) where one is published. NEMO publishes only a minimum weight without a case for the Moonlite Elite, which the card below flags. Big Agnes is the other edge case: the Skyline UL's own page lists both a 794 g total weight and a 765 g trail weight for the same chair, and we used the heavier, more complete figure rather than the flattering one, the same rule this site applies whenever a maker's own page disagrees with itself.

Because grams-saved rewards being lighter than a chair that already exists, and every chair here is heavier than nothing, treat the value figures on this page as a comparison between chairs, not a reason to buy one. A chair is the honest luxury item on this site's builds.

The numbers side by side

The Max load row is the one to read carefully. NEMO leaves the Moonlite Elite's blank, and Moon Lence's page doesn't state one for this model either, while Helinox and Big Agnes both publish a figure for every chair they sell.

1. Crazy Creek HEX 2.0 Original: the best backpacking chair for value

Foam and carbon-reinforced fiberglass stays, no poles or hubs to lose or break, at 567 g (1 lb 4.0 oz). It lists at $50–$100 MSRP band, and its value figure, Value 9.5/10, is the best of any chair here. Crazy Creek rates it to 113.4 kg (250 lb) and backs it with a Sit-for-Life limited lifetime warranty.

There are no legs: you sit on the ground with a backrest, which is a real ask if getting up off the dirt is hard on your knees. Buy it if you want the best grams-saved-per-dollar figure in the category and don't mind ground level. Skip it if you need a real seat height; the Chair Zero below is the lightest chair with legs.

2. Helinox Chair Zero: the lightest chair with legs

A shock-corded DAC aluminum frame gets you a real seat at 531 g (1 lb 2.7 oz) packed, about 434 g (15.3 oz) under the Chair One reference. Helinox rates it to 120 kg (265 lb) and packs it to 35 x 10 x 10 cm.

It costs more than the frameless Crazy Creek and, oddly, more than the larger Chair One it's lighter than, with a lower load rating (120 kg against the Chair One's 145 kg) and a thinner 100D seat fabric. Buy it if you want the lightest option that still puts you in a real chair. Skip it if the frameless HEX 2.0's value figure is more important to you than legs.

3. NEMO Moonlite Elite: the only chair here that reclines

An HTP and Dyneema cord suspension lets you adjust the recline while seated, from upright for a meal to laid back for the stars, at a NEMO-stated minimum weight of 552 g (1 lb 3.5 oz) (no carry case included in that figure). It lists at $150–$200 MSRP band and carries NEMO's lifetime warranty.

NEMO publishes no weight capacity for it, unlike every framed chair around it on this page, and its carry case unrolls into a platform for sand rather than packing to a fixed small size. Buy it if a reclining seat is worth the premium and the missing capacity figure doesn't concern you. Skip it if you want a stated load rating in writing before you buy.

4. Trekology YIZI LITE: the budget framed chair that actually saves weight

A 7000-series aluminum frame at 780 g (1 lb 11.5 oz), about 185 g (6.5 oz) under the Chair One, for well under half the Chair Zero's price. It lists at $25–$50 MSRP band and packs to a 30 cm bag, shorter than any other framed chair here.

The seat sits low at 33 cm, standing up takes more effort than from a taller chair, and Trekology's own page states two conflicting capacity figures (250 lb in the specs, 330 lb in the body copy; we use the lower one). The warranty is 1 year, against 5 for both Helinox chairs. Buy it if you want a real frame at the lowest price for one. Skip it if a low seat height bothers you or you weigh close to its stated limit.

5. Big Agnes Skyline UL: the highest capacity per gram

A shock-corded aircraft-aluminum frame and Robic nylon ripstop seat, rated to 125 kg (275 lb) at a stated 38 cm seat height, and it weighs 794 g (1 lb 12.0 oz) packed. It lists at $150–$200 MSRP band, the priciest chair on this page.

It's only about 170 g lighter than the much cheaper Chair One and packs to a 43 cm bag, the longest packed length here. Buy it if the published seat height and capacity numbers matter more to you than price. Skip it if you're shopping on value: both Helinox chairs and the Trekology beat it there.

6. Helinox Chair One: the benchmark

This is the chair every other weight on this page is measured against, so it saves nothing by definition: it's the 965 g (2 lb 2.0 oz) reference itself. What it buys instead is the highest rated capacity here (145 kg / 320 lb) and a 600D Oxford seat fabric, tougher than the thin ripstop on the lighter chairs around it.

Buy it if you want the toughest seat fabric and the highest capacity in this group and don't mind the extra grams. Skip it if a lighter pack matters more; the Chair Zero cuts about 430 g for a similar build.

7. Moon Lence 4th Generation: the cheapest chair here

The lowest list price on this page, at $25–$50 MSRP band, in a heavy 900D Oxford seat fabric. It weighs 1,225 g (2 lb 11.2 oz), about 260 g (9.2 oz) over the Chair One reference, and folds to the same 14 x 4.5 x 4.5 in packed size.

It's the heaviest chair on this page, so it saves money, not grams, and the maker publishes no weight capacity, frame alloy or seat height for this model. Buy it if price is the only variable and you don't mind the extra weight. Skip it if you're buying a chair specifically to cut pack weight; every other chair on this page is lighter.

Packed size, for the pack you actually own

A chair that saves grams but won't fit your pack's side pocket is a chair you end up strapping to the outside, which defeats some of the point. Packed length varies more than weight does across this list:

The Trekology and both Helinox chairs pack shortest, which matters most for a small ultralight pack with limited side-pocket depth. The Big Agnes Skyline UL packs longest at 43 cm despite being one of the lighter chairs on this page, a real trade if pack space is tighter than pack weight for you.

Warranty and seat fabric, side by side

A chair fails at the seams or the frame joints, not usually from wear on the seat itself, which makes the warranty term one of the more honest signals of how a maker expects its own product to hold up over years of use, not just the first trip.

The pattern runs opposite to what the price tags might suggest. Both Helinox chairs and the frameless Crazy Creek, the priciest and one of the cheapest picks here, back their products the longest. The two lowest-cost framed chairs, Trekology and Moon Lence, carry the shortest or least specific terms.

How each frame sets up

Both Helinox chairs use the same shock-corded DAC aluminum pole system with resin hubs, so a Chair One owner already knows how to set up a Chair Zero. Big Agnes uses its own shock-corded aircraft aluminum poles, color-coded for quick assembly. NEMO's Moonlite Elite is the outlier: forged 6061 aluminum hubs and 7001 aluminum tubes carry an HTP and Dyneema cord suspension rather than a simple pole arc, which is what lets it recline in the first place. The Crazy Creek HEX has no poles at all, only carbon-reinforced fiberglass stays sewn into the foam, and the Trekology and Moon Lence chairs use plain 7000-series and unspecified aluminum frames without a shock-cord system.

In practice, every shock-corded frame here (both Helinox chairs, the Big Agnes) sets up the same way: unfold, let the corded poles snap into their sockets, done in under a minute. The non-corded framed chairs take a little longer to line up by hand, and the frameless Crazy Creek is the fastest of all to deploy because there's nothing to assemble, just unroll and clip the straps.

How to choose a backpacking chair

1. Decide if you need legs. A frameless seat like the Crazy Creek HEX saves the most weight and money but leaves you at ground level. A framed chair costs more grams and dollars for a real seat height.
2. Check the load rating, when it's published. Helinox and Big Agnes both state a capacity for every chair; NEMO and Moon Lence don't for the models on this page. A missing number isn't proof of a weak chair, but it's nothing to plan around either.
3. Seat height changes comfort and ease of standing. The Trekology sits at 33 cm; the Big Agnes states 38 cm. A lower seat packs smaller but takes more effort to get up from.
4. Warranty length is a real signal. Helinox backs its chairs for 5 years. The budget framed picks here run 1 year or state no term at all beyond a return window.

Mistakes to avoid

• Buying the lightest chair without checking the capacity. The lightest chairs here also carry some of the lower load ratings; check the number against your own weight plus clothing.
• Assuming every chair packs the same length. Packed lengths on this page run from 30 to 43 cm, which matters for a smaller pack or a frameless ultralight pack with no side pocket.
• Forgetting a chair is optional weight. Every chair here makes your kit heavier, not lighter. If you're chasing a lower base weight, this is one of the first line items worth cutting.
• Ignoring seat height for a bad back or bad knees. A ground-level frameless chair is the lightest option, but it's a genuinely harder chair to get up from than a framed one.
• Assuming a pricier chair is always the tougher chair. The Big Agnes Skyline UL costs the most on this page and uses a thinner seat fabric than the cheaper Helinox Chair One; price here tracks weight savings, not durability.
