The Best Budget Rain Jacket for Backpacking

Rain gear is the one item in a kit you own but hope you never need to test. That makes it a strange category to shop on price: the jacket has to work exactly once, in the worst weather of the trip, and most buyers overspend to hedge against that. This page ranks six jackets on what their makers actually publish, so you can see exactly what a lower price costs you in fabric, features and waterproofing, rather than guessing.

How we picked

The reference and the math. Every grams-saved figure is measured against the Marmot Men's PreCip Eco Rain Jacket, the mainstream entry-level shell this site uses as its rain-shell reference, which the maker lists at 305 g (10.8 oz). Grams per dollar is grams saved divided by the maker's list price. The full rubric is on our methodology page.

Waterproof and breathability figures, only where published. Rab is the only maker here that states a hydrostatic head and a breathability (MVTR) figure. Marmot, Frogg Toggs and Outdoor Research publish fabric type and construction details but no waterproof rating number, so we say "not published" rather than estimate one. Every performance figure is the maker's own claim, never a measurement of ours.

The near-tie, and why the order isn't pure score. Two jackets land within a tenth of a point of each other on this site's overall score: the Outdoor Research Helium UL and the Frogg Toggs Ultra-Lite2. At that margin, on a page whose entire premise is the budget end of the category, we lead with the jacket that actually earns the "Best Budget Rain Jacket" title: the Ultra-Lite2 costs a fraction of the Helium UL's list price and posts more than three times its grams-saved-per-dollar figure. The Helium UL is still an excellent jacket; it's covered below as the premium ceiling rather than ranked first.

The numbers side by side

Only one row in the Waterproof column isn't a dash: Rab is the sole maker on this page willing to put a number on its jacket's waterproofing. That's not proof the others leak; it's just what each maker chose to publish.

Who each pick is for

1. Frogg Toggs Ultra-Lite2: the best budget rain jacket

At 249 g (8.8 oz), this is lighter than the Marmot PreCip Eco reference, and it lists at $25–$50 MSRP band, the lowest price on this page by a wide margin. Its value figure: Value 8.0/10, best of the six. Frogg Toggs certifies it to ASTM F1670 (resistance to liquid substances) and gives it an adjustable hood with a storm flap over the zipper.

There are no pockets and no pit zips in Frogg Toggs' feature list, and the non-woven fabric carries no published denier or waterproof rating. Buy it if you want the cheapest real rain protection in your pack, or a spare to keep in the car. Skip it if you need pockets on the move; the Xtreme Lite below adds them for about double the price.

2. Marmot PreCip Evo: the lightest name-brand jacket

Marmot's newer PreCip, built on a 2.5-layer NanoPro fabric it states weighs 83 g/m2, at 283 g (10.0 oz). It lists at $100–$150 MSRP band, the same price as the PreCip Eco below, and stuffs into its own pocket.

Marmot's feature list for the Evo drops the pit zips the Eco has, and it publishes no waterproof or breathability rating for either PreCip. Buy it if you want the lightest jacket at this price point and don't climb hard enough to need pit-zip venting. Skip it if you run hot; the Eco's pit zips are worth the small weight difference.

3. Rab Downpour: the storm-worthy pick

The only jacket here with a published hydrostatic head, at 20,000 mm, and a stated breathability of 20,000 g/m2/24 hrs. It weighs 377 g (13.3 oz) in size M and lists at $100–$150 MSRP band, and Rab adds underarm vents on top of the front zip.

It's the heaviest jacket on this page, 128 g (4.5 oz) over the Ultra-Lite2, with no stuff pocket listed. Buy it if you hike somewhere storms are the norm and want a published number behind the waterproofing. Skip it if weight or price matters more than a mid-range budget can stretch to.

4. Marmot PreCip Eco: the classic with pit zips

This is the site's rain-shell reference, so it saves no weight by definition: it's the 305 g (10.8 oz) every other jacket here is measured against. It lists at $100–$150 MSRP band and adds pit zips, a DriClime chin guard and a limited lifetime warranty.

Marmot publishes no waterproof or breathability rating for the NanoPro Eco fabric, and the newer PreCip Evo is lighter at the same price. Buy it if pit-zip venting matters more to you than shaving grams. Skip it if weight is the deciding factor; the Evo beats it at the same price.

5. Frogg Toggs Xtreme Lite: pockets on a budget

Adds what the Ultra-Lite2 skips: fully taped seams, zippered hand pockets and an adjustable waist, at a weight Frogg Toggs states only as a range (8.3-11.5 oz depending on size; we show the heavier figure). It lists at $50–$100 MSRP band, about a higher MSRP band more than the Ultra-Lite2.

Because Frogg Toggs only publishes a size range, you can't know the exact weight of the size you order. Buy it if pockets and taped seams are worth not knowing the precise weight. Skip it if you want a firm number before you buy; the Ultra-Lite2 states one figure.

6. Outdoor Research Helium UL: the premium ceiling

The lightest jacket on this page, at 162 g (5.7 oz), in a 15D Toray Dermizax shell with fully taped seams and waterproof YKK Aquaguard zippers. It lists at $200–$300 MSRP band, several times the Ultra-Lite2's price.

It has no pit zips and only one pocket, which doubles as the stuff sack. Against the Ultra-Lite2, it costs a higher MSRP band more to save 87 g (3.1 oz) off an already-light budget pick. Buy it if shaving every gram matters more than the price gap. Skip it if this page's "budget" is a hard rule for you: five jackets here cost a fraction of this one.

What about a poncho instead?

A rain poncho trades a jacket's fit and pit-zip venting for more coverage over your pack and, in some designs, a second job as a tarp or groundsheet. For scale, the cheapest poncho this site tracks, the Frogg Toggs Ultra-Lite2, weighs 255 g (9.0 oz) and lists at Under $25 MSRP band, a little lighter and a little cheaper than the Ultra-Lite2 jacket above. It has no grommets or tie-outs, so unlike the tarp-style ponchos in the comparison guide, it can't double as a shelter. That's the pattern across ponchos generally: the cheapest ones are rainwear only, and the ones built to double as a tarp or groundsheet cost and weigh more than a budget jacket, not less.

Fabric weight as a durability signal

Denier (the fiber thickness a maker weaves into the fabric) isn't published by every jacket here, but where it is, it tracks roughly with how the maker talks about durability. Outdoor Research states 15D for the Helium UL, its thinnest and lightest fabric; Rab states 50D for the Downpour, its toughest and heaviest. Neither Frogg Toggs jacket nor either Marmot PreCip publishes a denier figure, which is one more reason their cards above read "not published" rather than a number.

A thinner shell isn't automatically a worse one for backpacking, where you're not dragging a jacket through the same abrasion a bushwhacking hunting jacket sees. But it is a real trade if you hike through brush, scramble on rock, or set your pack down on the jacket while it's stuffed in a pocket. The two Frogg Toggs jackets sit at the fragile end of that spectrum by reputation, even without a published denier number to confirm it; treat them as rain protection for the trail, not a jacket to wear setting up camp among sharp rocks or downed branches.

Hood design, jacket by jacket

A rain jacket lives or dies on its hood in a real storm, and the six makers here take six different approaches. Frogg Toggs keeps both hoods simple: the Ultra-Lite2's is adjustable with cord locks, and the Xtreme Lite adds E-Z push cord locks on an attached hood. Marmot's PreCip Eco hood rolls into the collar when you don't need it, while the newer PreCip Evo uses what Marmot calls an "ergo hood," shaped to move with your head rather than block your side vision.

Rab and Outdoor Research both add rigid structure to hold the hood's brim out of your eyes in wind and rain: Rab calls it a stiffened peak, adjustable with one hand, and Outdoor Research builds a wire brim into the Helium UL's hood. Neither Frogg Toggs jacket nor either Marmot PreCip has a stiffened or wired brim, which matters most in a sideways rain where a soft hood collapses into your field of view.

DWR coatings and how each maker describes them

Durable water repellent (DWR) is the outer finish that makes rain bead up and roll off instead of soaking into the face fabric; it's a separate layer from the waterproof membrane underneath and it wears off with use, well before the jacket itself fails. Marmot names its finish on both PreCip jackets: a C0 (PFAS-free) DWR on the Evo, part of the PFC-free NanoPro Eco fabric on the older Eco. Rab states a fluorocarbon-free DWR on the Downpour. Frogg Toggs and Outdoor Research don't name a specific DWR formulation on either jacket page.

None of that changes how waterproof a jacket is on day one; DWR affects how the fabric sheds water and breathes as the coating ages. A jacket that's stopped beading water is still keeping rain out through its membrane, it just feels wetter and clammier doing it, which is a maintenance question more than a buying one.

How to choose a budget rain jacket

1. Decide if you need a published waterproof rating. Only Rab states a hydrostatic head and breathability figure on this page. If that number matters to you, the Downpour is the only jacket here that gives you one to check.
2. Pit zips or a lighter fabric. The Marmot PreCip Eco vents from the armpits; its own lighter Evo sibling drops them. If you run hot on climbs, venting usually matters more than a few extra grams.
3. Pockets change how you use it. The Ultra-Lite2 has none. The Xtreme Lite and the Helium UL each add at least one, which matters if you want your hands warm or a map within reach without stopping.
4. Denier is a durability signal, when it's published. Outdoor Research states 15D for the Helium UL, the thinnest fabric here; Rab states 50D for the Downpour, the toughest. Frogg Toggs and Marmot don't publish a denier figure for their jackets.
5. A budget jacket is still real rain protection. The cheapest jacket on this page beats the site's rain-shell reference on weight and posts the best value figure of the six. What it gives up is features and a published fabric spec, not necessarily the ability to keep you dry.

Mistakes to avoid

• Assuming a missing waterproof rating means a jacket leaks. Most makers on this page simply don't publish a hydrostatic-head number; it isn't the same as a bad number.
• Buying a size-range jacket and hoping for the light end. The Xtreme Lite's weight spans 8.3 to 11.5 oz across sizes; a larger size lands well above the Ultra-Lite2's listed weight.
• Packing a rain jacket you've never opened. Every jacket here stuffs into a pocket or sack. Practice getting it on quickly before you're doing it for the first time in a downpour.
• Skipping venting entirely. A waterproof, non-breathable shell traps sweat on a climb. Pit zips or a higher-breathability fabric matter more than the price tag once you're actually moving in it.
• Letting a jacket sit wet in the pack. None of the six makers here publish care instructions on the product pages linked above; as a general rule, a wet shell left balled up for days breaks down faster than one dried out at the first opportunity.
